At Raul Castillo Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are coed and encourage students of all shapes, sizes, and ages to participate. BJJ applies the principles of balance, leverage, and momentum to overcome opponents. It uses an attacker’s energy against them rather than directly opposing it. This is in contrast to many other martial arts that emphasis power, strength, and speed. BJJ utilizes all forms of grappling techniques including throwing, trapping, joint locks, holds, striking, and kicking.
Classes typically begin with a high intensity warm up that includes cardiovascular drills, Brazilian natural gymnastics, and fundamentals of BJJ. Techniques are then demonstrated and partner work is required. This is a contact sport. Classes then finish with grappling or sparring with a partner or instructor enabling the students to practice the techniques just learned in a more realistic situation.
Classes may require the Gi or no Gi at times. Both should be brought to all classes.
There are many benefits to training BJJ including cardiovascular exercise, conditioning, improving ability to defend yourself, mental exercise, it builds confidence, you make friends, and it’s fun.
