Charlene Coats has dedicated the last 20years of her life to the study of Martial Arts. Like her teacher Raul, she originated under the instruction of George Marenco in the style of Kami-Do-Ryu. Charlene achieved the rank of First Degree Black Belt at the age of 14, and later went on to earn her second degree at the age of 16. Charlene was a 4x Karate state champion which led her to become a 4x regional Karate champion and a 2x national champion. Charlene taught Karate for 5years under Marenco, and after becoming Golden State Karate Association World Champion in 1999, Charlene went on to study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006 under the instruction of Raul Castillo. Charlene currently holds the rank of 2nd Degree Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Since the Opening of Raul Castillo Martial Arts in 2007, Charlene has become one of the main instructors in the youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program, the Head Instructor of the kids Karate program, Women’s Grappling and the Special Defenses for special needs youth! She is also available for private instruction in Martial Arts and Fitness and co teaches the Fitness kickboxing class.
Teaching, training and competing under Raul Castillo for the last six years has earned Charlene over 25 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu titles. She is the current IBJJF World female brown belt middle weight Champion and absolute Bronze medalist. Charlene holds the IBJJF American National brown belt Gi & No-Gi weight and absolute division titles, and is a 5x US Open Champion, 4x World medalist and 4x Pan American medalist. Amongst her past achievements Charlene took Gold at the 2010 IBJJF Pan American Championships in the Purple Belt Division. Charlene is one of the only American women to medal in 4 out of 5 IBJJF World Championships since its debut in America in 2007. She took a Silver at the IBJJF World Championships in 2008 and 2009 and Bronze in the Purple belt division 2010. She is currently ranked 3rd of all competitive female brown belts in the World and continues to climb!
Currently, Charlene continues to make full use of her close attention to detail in her teaching and in competition, specializing in Karate, women’s self defense, sport Jiu-Jitsu, and youth classes
