Charlene has dedicated the last 20years of her life to the study of Martial Arts. Originating under the instruction of George Marenco in the Karate style of Kami-Do-Ryu, Charlene achieved the rank of First Degree Black Belt at the age of 14, and later went on to earn her second degree at the age of 16. As a competitive Karate Black Belt Charlene became a 4x Karate state champion which led her to become a 4x regional Karate champion and a 2x national champion. Charlene taught Karate for 5years under Marenco, and after becoming Golden State Karate Association World Champion in 1999, Charlene went on to study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006 under the instruction of Raul Castillo. After 7 dedicated years of study, Charlene earned her Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2013. Since the Opening of Raul Castillo Martial Arts in 2007, Charlene has become one of the main instructors in the youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program, the Head Instructor of the kids Karate program and team, Women’s Grappling and the Special Defenses for special needs youth! She is also available for private instruction in Martial Arts and Fitness!
Teaching, training and competing under Raul Castillo for the last 7years has earned Charlene over 25 top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu titles, including the IBJJF World Championship female brown belt middle weight Title and absolute weight bronze medalist. Charlene was top 8 in the World Professional JiuJitsu Championships in Abu Dhabi 2013 and prior to her Black Belt promotion also held the IBJJF American National brown belt Gi & No-Gi weight and absolute division titles.
As she enters into her Black Belt competitive career she will cary over a a great record as a 5x US Open Champion, 5x World medalist and 5x Pan American medalist. Amongst her past achievements Charlene took Gold at the 2010 IBJJF Pan American Championships in the Purple Belt Division and remains one of the only American women to medal in 5 out of 6 IBJJF World Championships since its debut in America in 2007. She took a Silver at the IBJJF World Championships in 2008 and 2009 and Bronze in the Purple belt division 2010.
Continuing the use of her close attention to detail in her teaching and in competition, Charlene continues to climb in the Martial Arts, specializing in Karate, women’s self defense, sport Jiu-Jitsu, and youth classes in Half Moon Bay.
